WCC LIFE MEMBERS

Stuart "Post Holes" Sinclair was the first president of the Wayback Cricket Club and served in the top job for eight consecutive seasons. He captained the club in 1948/49 and was vice captain in 1946-47 & 1947-48.

Stuart came to the club late in his cricketing life as his pre-war cricketing career was with Charlton in the Tumby Bay Cricket Association. Stuart was a right hand opening bat with a good technique and also a fairly sharp right arm bowler for his age. Sometimes he used to ride his horse into cricket from his farm at Charlton and tether it to the stock tank opposite the Football Club rooms at Centenary Oval. Stuart played association cricket for the Lincoln combined sides and also represented Eyre Peninsula in the SACA country carnivals.

Stuart played for our club in our first 3 seasons and played his first match on 2/11/1946 against Flinders, which was the second match in the history of our club.  He won our Batting Average trophy in the 1946-47 and in the last game of the 1946-47 season scored a sharp single of the last ball of the match. This enabled the club to win the match outright, finish minor premiers and win the Alaska Premiership Shield, as in those days there were no finals to decide the premiership.
Stuart was a solid player and strong administrator for the club and was awarded life membership at our 30 Year Dinner in November 1976. He passed away in 1985 aged 73.

1 - STUART SINCLAIR

1946-54

Reg was the club's first secretary in its inaugural season of 1946 and held the position for the following 8 years. He had the job of finding cricket gear for the team to use, with equipment being in short supply following the war. When he got a set of gear together he stored it in a wheat bag at Ted Blackshaw's shed opposite the Pier Hotel. Reg used to bring the club gear to cricket on the handlebars of his push bike as nobody had a car in those days. He was a great secretary and organised trips to Cowell, Wudinna and Edillilie to play social cricket during the early years of the club. In those days, players paid ball money as well as subs and Reg had the unenviable task of trying to extract monies from those players with deep pockets.

Reg played a few games for our club in the early years, however his performances in these games confirmed that his administrative skills far outweighed his cricketing ability. Reg was awarded Life membership at our 30 Year Dinner in November 1976. He continued to follow the club for many years until ill health confined him to the Mathew Flinders Nursing Home. Reg died in December 1996 shortly after our 50 Year Anniversary celebrations, aged 75.

3 - REG AVELING

1946-1954

Max Reidy was a great club man, whose cricket career spanned over 20 years. Max started in 1957/58 whilst still a Colt and played until the 1964/65 season. He resumed playing in 1970-71 and played his final game for the Club in 1979. During this period, Max played over 200 games for the club.

Max played in 5 A Grade Premierships, the first in 1961-62 and the last in 1978-79. Max was very talented and his most valuable asset was being a consistent right hand batsman, with a highest score of 177 in the 1962-63 season. He was known for his ability to play the short ball with his strong pull shot. He was also a part time wicket keeper and a useful off spin bowler, with a best bowling performance of 7/53. He was an assured and safe fieldsman, who could be relied on to hold a catch, particularly close to the wicket. Max was a good team man who read the game well. He was Vice Captain for 2 seasons and was always willing to provide technical advice to his captains.

Unfortunately, we also do not have all of the details of Max's playing  career prior to 1971-72. However, during his career, Max would have made over 5,000 runs for the club (we know of at least 4,907), which makes him the 5th highest run scorer for the club in A Grade. Max made at least 2 centuries and 24 half centuries and was also was part of at least 7 century partnerships. With his right arm off spinners, he took at least 75 wickets. Max won the A Grade Batting Average trophy in 1973-74 and the A grade Batting Aggregate trophy in the following year and represented Port Lincoln at Association level in 7 of the seasons that he played.

Max also assisted the club at committee level and played an integral part in the raising of funds by running raffles and spinning wheels. He was a die hard Waybacker, along with his 2 older brothers from an early age. Max was awarded Life Membership in April 1977. A work transfer saw him move from Port Lincoln to Kingston SA in 1979, where he continued to play cricket for a few years and where he now lives in "retirement" with his wife Cheryl.

5 - MAX REIDY

1957-1965
1970-1979

John Forbes was arguably the best bowler to represent the club. He arrived in Port Lincoln early in 1974 and left in March 1984. During this period John played 156 games for the Club, in which he took 534 wickets at an average of 9.44 and is easily the leading wicket taker for the Club. In conjunction with Kevin Enright he formed a formidable opening bowling attack for the club for a period of approx 10 years. He also made 1,206 runs at an average of just under 15. John played 2 B Grade games for the club as a batsman, scoring a total of 121 runs. This included a score 79 as an opening batsman, which was the highest individual score for Waybacks B Grade in the 1982/83 season.

John took 5 wickets in an innings an amazing 46 times and also took 10 wickets in a match 7 times. 9/9 was his best bowling performance and he also took a hat trick in his first season with the club. His performances in finals matches were outstanding, as he took 121 wickets at an average of 5.9 and also made several good contributions with the bat, mainly when we were under pressure.

John played in 6 A Grade premiership teams. In 3 of these he captained the side and in 2 others, he was Vice-Captain. He was also Vice-Captain on 4 other occasions. John won the Association Bowling Aggregate trophy twice and the Bowling Average trophy 4 times, with his greatest achievement being in the 1976/77 season, when he took 97 wickets, but amazingly did not win the Association's Most Valuable Player award for that season. He also won club bowling trophies in nearly every season that he played and won the club's Most Valuable Player trophy 5 times. In November 1977, John represented SA Country against India. He followed this up by again representing SA Country against Pakistan in December 1981. John also represented Port Lincoln at Association level in the 1977/78, 1979/80 & 1983/84 seasons.

As well as being an outstanding player, John was also a fine worker for the club. He was the Club's Secretary/Treasurer from 1974/75 to 1977/78 and was then Vice President from 1978/79 to 1983/84. He also represented the club as an Association Delegate and coached our Colts in the 1979/80 season.

John was awarded Life Membership in April 1984, shortly after he and his family moved to Adelaide to further his children's education and was selected as Captain of the club's Team of Champions that was announced at our 75 year celebrations in November 2022. He now lives in retirement in Adelaide and maintains an active interest in the Club's affairs. In 2009, the A Grade Most Valuable Player Trophy became the John Forbes Medal in recognition of his outstanding playing record. John has attended a number of our recent Presentation Nights to present the award named in his honour.

7 - JOHN FORBES

1974-84

Ken arrived in Port Lincoln in 1948 and was "signed up" for Waybacks before he arrived, as his brother in law Snow Hicks was a staunch Waybacker. He played his first game for the club in the B Grade on 30th October 1948 (his first A Grade game was on 20th November 1948) and nineteen seasons later he played his last game on 24th February 1968. Over this period, Ken played over 150 A and a few B Grade games for Waybacks.

Ken started his career as a right arm opening bowler and in later years became a medium pacer who had learned "the tricks of the trade". Unfortunately we do not have the full details of Ken's career, however he would have taken over 300 A Grade wickets (we are aware of 286) for Waybacks and is the 6th highest wicket taker in the Club's history. He took 5/41 in the victorious 1954/55 Grand Final and 5 wickets in an innings on at least 10 other occasions. He won our A Grade Bowling Aggregate trophy twice in the 1960's. His best bowling was 7/7 in A Grade (he took 10 wickets in this match) and 7/19 in B Grade. Ken was one of our key players in 1949-50, when we were minor premiers and therefore won the premiership. He was also a member of 4  other A Grade Premiership teams, including the undefeated teams of 1961/62 and 1962/63. Ken also represented Port Lincoln in at least 6 of the seasons that he played.

Whilst certainly not one of the best batsmen in the Club's history, Ken was a more than handy hard hitting late order batsman who at times made some useful and quick runs, often clearing the boundary. During his A Grade career, Ken would have made over 1,500 runs (we are aware of 1,468), with a highest score of 71 and at least 2 other half centuries. He also was part of the club's record partnership of 117 for the 8th wicket in the 1956/57 season.

Ken served on the committee for four years, was a vice patron of the club for three years and the A Grade captain in 1965/66. He also provided active support and assistance to our Senior Colts team, particularly in the 1960's. Ken was awarded life membership when our Honour Board was unveiled in February 1985. Ken passed away in May 2014 aged 92.

9 - KEN BERTRAM

1948-1968

Paul Richards' lengthy playing career with the Club covered the period from February 1978 to March 1994. His playing career, comprised 95 A Grade games and 161 B Grade games, during which he made 1,593 runs in A Grade and 4,759 runs in B Grade, which included 4 centuries (all undefeated). Paul featured in 3 A Grade century partnerships and 10 B Grade century partnerships, which included the club's record B Grade partnership of 133 for the 6th wicket. He also took 7 A Grade wickets and 73 B Grade wickets. His highest scores were 59 not out (twice) in A Grade and 120 not out in B Grade. Best bowling performances were 3/28 in A Grade and 5/16 in B Grade. He is the highest B Grade run scorer for the Club.

Paul was a member of 3 A Grade premiership teams and 9 B Grade premiership teams. He captained 2 B Grade premiership teams, was Vice Captain in 2 others and also captained the club in one other season. In his final year with the club, he and his son Wayne were members of a B Grade premiership team.

His great playing career was backed up with 6 B Grade Most Valuable Player trophies, 7 B Grade Batting Aggregate trophies, 7 B Grade Batting Average trophies and the B Grade Bowling Average trophy in 1993/94, which was his final year as a player. In addition, Paul won the Association's B Grade Batting Aggregate and Average trophies 3 & 4 times respectively. He also gave great service as Colts Coach for 5 years, during which time our Colts won 2 premierships. Paul relished a challenge and was at his best when the chips were down. There was probably no player in Port Lincoln who valued his wicket more than Paul.

Off the field, Paul gave great service to the club, particularly during his time as owner of a local corner deli. His efforts, together with those of his wife Kathy and their staff raised thousands of dollars for the club through the sale of Bingo Tickets. Prior to owing his own business, Paul was a very active participant in our Meat Spin and 100 Club raffles.

Paul served on the committee in nearly every season during his playing days and also represented the club as an Association Delegate. In addition, he represented Port Lincoln at Association level in 7 of the seasons that he played, one of which was as B Grade Henderson Shield Captain and assisted with the coaching of the Port Lincoln Colts (Horgan Shield) teams for a few seasons.

As a fitting reward for his excellent service to the club, Paul was made a Life Member in April 1988. It was a sad loss for the club, when he and his family departed Port Lincoln in January 1995 to move to Adelaide to pursue business interests and further their children's education. Paul and Kathy returned to Port Lincoln in 2003 when they purchased another corner deli and were again good financial supporters of the club until 2017 when they sold the business to retire in Port Lincoln. Paul still maintains an interest in the club and has been the club Patron for a number of years.

1978-1994

A founding member who played in the inaugural premiership team, Bill Standing was won of our club's best ever bowlers  during his 12 year career with Waybacks. Bill played his first game on 2nd November 1946 (the 2nd game in our club's history) and played his last match in the victorious Grand Final against Lincoln South on 15th and 22nd of March 1958. During his career with Waybacks, Bill played over 100 games, many of which were 2 day matches. Bill was the Captain of our 1949-1950 team, who finished minor premiers and won the premiership and was a key player in 1946-1947, when we also finished minor premiers and won the premiership. Bill was also Captain of our 1954-1955 premiership team and a member of our 1957-1958 premiership team, as well as Captain of the club in 1950-1951 and 1956-1957.

Bill's left arm opening bowling caused the ball to swing alarmingly. In his later cricketing years he was a leg spin bowler. He would have taken over 400 wickets for the club (we know of at least 370) and produced match winning bowling figures in over a decade of cricket. His best bowling figures were 8/18 against Tasmans in his second last match for the club. Bill took 5 wickets in an innings over 23 times and 10 wickets in a match twice. He also took 4 wickets in 4 balls against Lincoln South on 19th January 1952 and a hat trick against Tasmans on 18th January 1958 in his last season for the club. Bill's left hand batting skills were unfortunately not on a par with his bowling skills, however he did make over 1,000 runs for the club with a top score of 76 not out.

Bill played many Association games and in fact represented Port Lincoln during every season that he played. This included being part of Port Lincoln's victorious 1955 Mortlock Shield Carnival team, when he won the trophy for the most wickets taken during the carnival. He also represented Eyre Peninsula at SACA  Carnivals and against a SACA team in Port Lincoln in March 1951 and was the "drinks" waiter for the State Country XI when they played against the visiting South African team at Centenary Oval in 1953. He won the Association Bowling Average 3 times (in 1953-1954, 1954-55 & 1957-1958) and won the Association Bowling Aggregate in 1951-1952 & 1954-55. He also won our Club Bowling Aggregate at least 3 times and our Club Bowling Average at least 6 times.

Bill was on our club's management committee for many years and was also thanked by Association president Mr T Speed for his tireless work for the Association. He and a number of other Port Lincoln cricketers, were responsible for laying the turf wicket at Centenary Oval. Bill and his family left Port Lincoln in 1958 and moved to Burra, where Bill continued to play cricket until he was 50 and then coached for a number of years. He loved his involvement with Waybacks in both cricket and football and was awarded Life Membership posthumously at our 50th Year Anniversary Dinner in November 1996, which was accepted on his behalf by his widow Win. He was also selected in the club's Team of Champions that was announced at our 75 year celebrations in November 2022. 15 - STEVE OVENS

1984-2011

Matt Roberts commenced his playing career for Waybacks in our Colts team in 1985/86, when his family moved to Port Lincoln from their farm property at Kapinnie. He commenced his senior playing career on a regular basis in 1988/89 and retired after the B Grade Premiership in March 2010. In his first 2 seasons of senior cricket, he played a number of games with his father Gavin.

During his senior playing career, Matt played 84 A Grade games and 188 B Grade games. He took 101 A Grade wickets (best bowling of 8/35) and 214 B Grade wickets (best bowling of 6/19) and made 369 A Grade runs and 3857 B Grade runs, the major portion of which were in the air. He made 2 centuries in B Grade, with a highest score of 130 and is currently the Club's 2nd highest B Grade run scorer and the 4th highest B Grade wicket taker for the Club. He was also a part of 8 century partnerships in B Grade, which include the club's record partnership of 112 for the 7th wicket. Matt started his career as a lively opening bowler and entertaining lower order batsman. However, a bad knee injury incurred playing football limited his playing appearances in 1993/94. He then left Port Lincoln for a couple of years. On his return in 1996/97 he became a hard hitting batsman and a slow medium pace bowler.

In his career at Waybacks, Matt played in 2 A Grade Premiership teams, 4 B Grade Premiership teams and 2 Colts Premiership teams. He was B Grade captain for 5 seasons from 1999/2000 to 2003/04, B Grade Vice Captain in 1996/97 and was Colts captain in 1985/86 and 1986/87. Matt won the B Grade Most Valuable Player trophy twice and won both A Grade Bowling trophies in 1991/92. He also won the B Grade Batting Aggregate trophy 6 times, The B Grade Batting Average trophy 5 times, the B Grade Bowling Aggregate trophy once and the B Grade Bowling Average trophy twice. In the season that he was Colts Captain, he won the Most Valuable Player, Batting Aggregate, Batting Average and Bowling Average trophies. Matt also won the Association B Grade Batting Aggregate and Bowling Average trophies in 2000/01 & 2002/03 respectively and represented Port Lincoln at Association level in 1991/92, 1992/93 & 2001/02.

As well as his excellent playing record, Matt was a tireless worker for the club over a long period. He was on the Management Committee for 11 years, was on the Social Committee for 12 years (2 of these were as President), was on the Editorial committee of our club magazine the Wayback Wisden for 7 years (3 of these were as editor) and served as an Association delegate. Matt also assisted at numerous social functions, where his cooking skills were highly valued, working bees and with club fundraising in areas such as the Backwards Draw and 50 Club.

His long standing service to the club was recognised with Life Membership at the Club's 60 year anniversary dinner in November 2006. Matt and his wife Angela, who was also an excellent worker for the club, left Port Lincoln in May 2010, when Matt accepted an employment transfer to Kalgoorlie. They now live in Lombok Indonesia and still maintain an interest in the club's affairs.

1985-1993
1996-2010

Jeremy Wright arrived in Port Lincoln in 1993 following an employment transfer and commenced his senior cricket career with Waybacks in the 1993/94 season. Since that time, Jeremy has played for/been involved with the club for 25 full seasons (missed 1995/96, 1997/98 and a fair portion of 1994/95). His career with Waybacks has seen him play 137 A Grade and 104 B Grade games. He is the only person in the club's history to play 100 games in A and B Grade. During this time, he has taken 205 A Grade (best bowling of 6/25)  and 59 B Grade wickets (best bowling of 5/12) and made 1,015 A Grade (highest score 39)  and 1,409 B Grade runs, with a highest score of 63. Jeremy started his career as a right arm bowler. Later in his career due to injuries, he concentrated on his batting and later in his playing career he also had a stint at wicket keeping.

Jeremy has played in 2 A Grade and 4 B Grade premiership teams. He captained the A Grade in 2000-01 (runners up) and 2001-02 and the B Grade in 2011-12 when they were premiers. Jeremy's long term involvement and contribution to the club were recognised in April 2012 when he was awarded Life Membership. In the 2012-2013 season he took on the role as one of our junior coaches, a position that he held until the 2014-15 season, when our Colts team, who were captained by his son Cade were premiers. Jeremy and his wife Tracy still live in Port Lincoln.

19 - JEREMY WRIGHT

1993-2021

Tenny Turner arrived in Port Lincoln towards the end of 1951 and commenced his playing career with the Wayback Cricket Club on the 3rd of November 1951 against Tasmans. He played a few games in the 1951-52 season and then did not play in 1952-53. He recommenced playing for Waybacks in the 1953-54 season and continued to play for the club until he retired from cricket in the 1970-71 season at the age of 47.

Tenny was a left hand opening batsman who put a high value on his wicket. Unfortunately, we do not have the full details of Tenny’s playing career, however we are aware that he played at least 167 A Grade games for the Club (it would not be surprising if the actual figure was closer to or greater than 200). During his career, Tenny made over 6,000 runs (we know of 6,323), which makes him the 2nd highest run scorer in the club’s history. Tenny’s highest score was 137 against Railways on 2nd of November 1957 (the team made 7/315 in 140 minutes). From the records that we have, this was Tenny’s only century for the club, although he scored many half centuries (we know of 44). Tenny also was part of at least 13 century partnerships for the club.

Over his 19 year career with Waybacks, Tenny won the A Grade Batting Aggregate trophy 10 times and the A Grade Batting Average trophy 9 times. He also won at least 2 Association batting trophies and represented Port Lincoln at Association level many times. Tenny was a more than useful right arm medium pace bowler. He took at least 76 wickets, with a best bowling performance of 6/63 in the 1963-64 Grand Final (which we lost) against Lincoln South. He won our A Grade Bowling Aggregate trophy in the 1965-66 season.

Tenny was a key member of our 1954-55, 1957-58, 1961-62 and 1962-63 premiership teams and was captain of the 1961-62 and 1962-63 teams who were undefeated. He was also captain in 1963-64, 1964-65, 1966-67 & 1969-70 and was regarded as an astute hard-nosed leader, who was never afraid to exchange a bit of on field banter with the opposition. During the 1960’s Tenny played many games with his sons Barry and Derek. He opened the batting with Barry a number of times and on 3 occasions, they shared in opening stands of over 100.

Off the field, Tenny was one of the main driving forces behind the club’s administration, particularly in the 1960’s. He was President from 1959-60 to 1961-62 and again in the 1968-69 & 1969-70 seasons. He also served as Assistant Secretary and as an Association Delegate. We have been informed that in the late 1960’s when the club’s finances were not all that rosy, Tenny assisted the club on occasions by paying sports store accounts and affiliation fees from his own funds.

In recognition of his involvement with the club in the 1950's and 1960's Tenny was awarded Life Membership in April 2013. He was also selected in the club's Team of Champions that was announced at our 75 year celebrations in November 2022. Tenny passed away on 20th June 2017 aged 93.

21 - TENNYSON TURNER

1951-1971

Shane who is also known as Ports, commenced his playing career with Waybacks in the 1991-1992 season as a "fill in" player. His first game for the club was in the B Grade against Bostons on December 1st 1991. Shortly afterwards on January 12th 1992, he played his first A Grade game for the club, which was also against Bostons. He began playing on a full time basis in 1995-1996 and was involved with the club for 20 seasons (he didn't play in 1998-1999).

Shane played 67 A Grade and 119 B Grade games for the club and during most of his playing career was a right arm opening/medium pace out swing bowler and a hard hitting lower order right hand batsman.  He has taken 98 A Grade and 168 B Grade wickets for the club and is currently the 6th highest B Grade wicket taker for the club. His best bowling figures are 6/38 in A Grade and 5/15 in B Grade. He has taken 5 wickets in an innings twice in A Grade and 5 times in B Grade. He scored 816 runs in A Grade and 2,206 runs in B Grade and is the club's 6th highest run scorer in the B Grade. Ports has made 3 scores of over 50 in A Grade with a highest score of 78 and 11 scores of over 50 in the B Grade with a top score of 117, which is his sole century for the club and has been a part of  1 A Grade and 2 B Grade century partnerships. He is one of only 3 players in the club's history to score over 2,000 runs and take over 100 wickets in B Grade.

Ports has played in 3 A Grade Premiership teams (1995-1996, 1996-1997 & 2002-2003) and 3 B Grade Premiership teams (2004-2005, 2006-2007 & 2009-2010). He captained the B Grade in 2007-2008.  During his playing career he has won a number of B Grade club trophies, which have included the Most Valuable Player 3 times, The Bowling Aggregate 3 times and the Bowling Average, Batting Aggregate and Batting Average twice. He also won the B Grade Association Batting Aggregate trophy in 2005-06 and both Association B Grade batting trophies in 2007/08.

Shane has regularly assisted with off field matters during his time with Waybacks. He was on the Management and Social Committees for 6 years and was involved with the coaching of our Colts for 6 years (Colts Coach in 2011-2012, 2012-2013, 2015-2016 and portion of 2016-2017 and Assistant Colts Coach in 2010-2011, 2013-2014 and 2014-2015). He has also been involved with the coaching and organisation of Association Colts teams. Other off field activities have included attending working bees, cooking bar-b-ques at social functions, contributing articles for our club magazine the Wayback Wisden and along with his family, hosting a number of social functions at their home.

In recognition of his lengthy service to the club, Shane was awarded Life Membership in April 2014. Shane and his family moved to the Sunshine Coast in Queensland in January 2017 and he still maintains an interest in the club's affairs.

23 - SHANE PORTER

1995-2017

Troy or Sarge commenced his playing career with Waybacks in the 1992-93 season when he transferred from the Tasman Cricket Club. His first game for the club was on 24th October 1992 against Charlton. Troy played for the club for 2 seasons and was then transferred from Port Lincoln in his employment at the start of the 1994-95 season.

He returned to Port Lincoln in 2002 and recommenced his career with Waybacks in the 2002-03 season. He has played for the club on a regular basis since this time, with the exception of the 2006-07 and 2018-19 seasons season when he played on a part time basis and the 2007-08, 2015-16 & 2019-20 seasons when he had breaks from the game.

Sarge has played 220 A Grade and 47 B Grade games for the club as a hard hitting right hand middle order bat, a more than capable right arm medium pace bowler and an excellent slips fieldsman. Only 4 other players have played more A Grade games for the Club.

During his A Grade career, Troy has scored 6,698 runs at an excellent average of just under 40, taken 138 wickets at an average of just over 14 and has completed 143 catches. He is the Club's highest run scorer in A Grade and has also

taken the most catches for the Club in A Grade. In his 47 B Grade games he has made 1,680 runs, with 1 century (101 not out) and 14 half centuries and has taken 12 wickets. His A Grade run tally includes 7 centuries (the most in the Club's history), with a highest score of 116 and 48 half centuries (also the most in the Club's history).

He has also made 2 centuries for the club in 20/20 cricket and has made over 500 runs in a season 6 times. His aggregate of 794 runs in 2004-05 is the highest number of runs in a season in the Club's history. Troy has also been part of 10 A Grade and 5 B Grade century partnerships. His under rated bowling has seen him take 5 wickets in an innings 4 times, with a best bowling performance of 5/7. A good example of Troy's all round ability was on the day of his best bowling performance against Charlton on 21st December 2002, when as well as taking 5/7, which included a hat trick, he also made 105 no.

Troy has played in 5 A Grade Premiership teams (1992-93, 2002-03, 2004-05, 2010-11 and 2024-25) and 1 B Grade Premiership team (2021-22) and was player of  the match in the Club's 2004-05, 2010-11 and 2024-25 (at the age of 52) A Grade Premiership victories. He captained the A Grade from 2003-04 to 2005-06 and was A Grade Vice Captain in 2013-14. Sarge has won the A Grade Most Valuable Player trophy a record number of 7 times, The A Grade Batting Aggregate 11 times (a club record), the A Grade Batting Average 12 times (another club record), the A Grade Bowling Aggregate in 2005-06, the A Grade Bowling Average in 2003-04 and 2005-06 and the A Grade Fielding trophy 4 times. Troy's playing record for the club is as good as any player in the Club's history.

Troy won the Association B Batting Average trophy in the 2022-23 season, along with both club batting trophies and was a joint winner of the Club Fielding trophy. In the 2021-2022 and 2023-2024 seasons, he also won the Club’s B Grade Batting Average trophy.

During his time with Waybacks, Sarge played for SA Country in the Australian Country Championships in Newcastle in January 1993 and represented Eyre Peninsula at the 1993, 1994, 2004, 2005 and 2012 SA Country Carnivals. He

captained the EP team in 2004 and 2005 and was selected in the Team of The Carnival in 1993 & 2004, when he was also player of the carnival. Troy has won the Association A Grade Most Valuable Player trophy 3 times, and the following other A Grade Association trophies: Batting Average 5 times, Batting Aggregate & Fielding twice and Bowling Average once. He also represented Port Lincoln at Association level in 1992/93 & 1993/94, from 2002 to 2006 and in 2008/09 & 2012/13. He was captain of the Henderson Shield teams in 1993/94, 2003/04 & 2004/05.

Whilst with Waybacks, Sarge has also assisted with off field and administration duties. He served on the Management and Social Committees for many years, which included 3 years as Social Committee President. He was also an Association Delegate for 3 years and an Association Selector at various times. Sarge has regularly attended working bees and club social functions and events and contributed articles for our Club magazine when he was A Grade Captain and Social Committee President.

In recognition of his service to the Club, Troy was awarded Life Membership in April 2015. He was also selected in the club's Team of Champions that was announced at the 75 year celebrations in November 2022. He is the current club President and has held that role for the last 2 seasons.

25 - TROY SARGEANT

1992-1994
2002-

Martin Tyler (Foo) commenced his involvement with the Wayback Cricket Club in the 2003-04 season, when his son Simon was playing Colts for our club. Unlike many of our existing Life Members, Martin did not have an extensive playing career. He played 14 B Grade games for the club (most of these were in the 2005-2006 season), in which he scored 20 runs with a highest score of 6 no, took 3 catches and bowled 1 over for 6 runs. He was a member of the B Grade 2005-2006 Grand Final team, who were unfortunately easily beaten by Charlton and made a solid 2 no in this game.

Over the years, Martin has given extensive off field service to the club. This commenced early in the piece when he started taking photos at our matches. He has continued to do this on a regular basis for all 3 grades and will quite often transfer the photos onto a DVD and then display them at the Football Club on Saturday nights for players and members to enjoy. He has also for a number of years (and continues to do so) supplied the majority of the photos for our club magazine the Wayback Wisden.

Foo's most valuable off field service to the club has been as drinks steward. He commenced this role, without being asked, in the 2004-2005 season when he supplied an esky stocked with suitable refreshments for our B Grade players. In subsequent years, he also supplied drinks for the A Grade players and once the club purchased a fridge for our practice facility, he took on the role of ensuring that this was always well stocked. He basically fulfilled the role of club drinks steward for a period of over 10 years. During this time, the club made a considerable amount of money as the result of Martin's efforts. As well as stocking the fridge, he also disposed of the empty cans and returned all of the unsold drinks to the fridge after games. He stood down from the position of drinks steward in the 2015-2016 season, when a change in his employment meant that he had to work every 2nd Saturday. Since that time, he has continued to assist with providing eskies at senior games and still disposes of the empty cans on a regular basis. We are sure that all of the senior players and members who have played & supported over the last 10-15 years, have appreciated Martin's efforts as club drinks steward.

Martin has also over the years devoted a lot of time towards the maintenance and improvement of our training facility. He has always been available to attend working bees and in the 2005/2006 season put up our garden shed with his son Simon's assistance. He has also over the years constructed the majority of the shelving that is in our 3 sheds and has made notice boards for club information to be displayed. Whenever there is work to be done at our training facility, Foo is one of the first to put his hand up to help and quite often does ongoing repairs and maintenance without having to be asked.

Being a committee member is not something that Martin is all that keen on, however over the years, he served on the club's management and social committees and in the 2009-2010 season took on the role of Social Committee President. Foo is also a staunch member of the "C Grade" and is a regular attendee at Thursday Night training sessions and senior matches, where he provides encouragement to our senior players and keeps them on their toes with sayings such as "hey, hey hey" and "let's hear em rattle".

Martin has certainly put in numerous hours of service for our club and was deservedly awarded Life Membership in April 2019. He stills maintains an active involvement in the club and currently holds the important positions of club drinks steward and club photographer.

27 - MARTIN TYLER

2003-

After a distinguished career of over 20 years with the Tumby Bay & District Colts Cricket Club, where he played over 300 games and was a member of  10 premiership teams, Andrew Woolford (Wooly) made the decision to join Waybacks in the 2008-2009 season.

Wooly has played 120 games in his senior career with Waybacks. He has played 80 A Grade games and scored 2,070 runs with a highest score of 151 no on the 6th February 2010 against Tasmans, which is the 7th highest individual A Grade score in the club’s history. In addition to his sole century, Wooly has scored 9 A Grade half centuries and has been a part of 6 A Grade century partnerships. Wooly has also taken 78 A Grade wickets with a best bowling performance of 4/9 and has taken 35 catches.

At the start of the 2012-13 season, Andrew helped the club out by taking on the position of B Grade Captain. He made an immediate impact scoring 134 in his first game against Tasmans. He then made a further 2 centuries in the next 5 games and in all totalled 701 runs for the year, which is the 2nd highest individual B Grade season aggregate for the club. In all, Wooly has played 40 B Grade games, during which he has scored 912 runs, taken 30 wickets and 10 catches. In addition to his 3 B grade centuries, Wooly has scored 5 B Grade half centuries and has been part of 3 B Grade century partnerships. His best B Grade bowling figures are 3/20. In the later stages of his career, Andrew played a few games with his son Brett and in the 2023-2024 season, he played a B Grade game with his daughter Jessica.

Wooly was a member of our A Grade premiership team in 2010-2011. He won the A Grade Most Valuable Player trophy in 2008-2009 & 2009-2010 and the B Grade Most Valuable Player trophy in 2012-2013. He has also won the A Grade Batting Aggregate twice, the A Grade Batting Average once and the B Grade Batting Aggregate and Average once. In 2009/10, Wooly was runner up in the Association A Grade Most Valuable Player Award and won both Association A Grade Batting trophies and in 2012/13, he was runner up in the Association B Grade Most Valuable Player Award and won both Association B Grade Batting trophies.

Off the field, Wooly has been a tireless worker for the club. He has been President for 5 season and Vice president for 5 seasons. He has served on the Club's Management Committee for 13 years and during that time has also been Association Delegate (5 seasons), Association Proxy Delegate (3 seasons), Child Safety Officer (8 seasons), Association Disputes Committee Representative (8 seasons) and Club Coach in 2014-2015. As well as his official positions, Wooly has assisted on a regular basis with many other tasks, namely maintenance and improvements to our training facility, scoring for all 3 grades, organising club trophies, being part of our committee who revised the Association Constitution, organising fundraising activities and organising and actively participating in numerous social functions. After having unofficially retired after the 2013-14 season, he has also helped the club out numerous times on a playing basis, when we have been short on numbers. In addition to his many roles with our club, Wooly has also been a good worker for the Port Lincoln Cricket Association as Vice President, Association player and selector. He represented Port Lincoln at Association level in 2009/10, 2010/11 & 2011/12 and was team manager/selector of the Eyre Peninsula team at the SA Country Carnivals for a number of years.

The Woolford family business Shield Security Systems have been generous sponsors and financial supporters of the club for the last 13 seasons. For a few years, their other family business Icon Sports Port Lincoln was also a club sponsor, in addition to supporting the club by providing reduced price club merchandise. During his journey with Waybacks, Wooly has received excellent support from his wife Kathryn and children Brett, Ryan & Jess. It would be remiss not to mention Kathryn’s excellent support of the club since Wooly has been involved. Kathryn has always attended club functions and assisted with catering, cooking, cleaning up etc. In the 2020-2021 season she organized club social events and fundraising functions and was acknowledged for her efforts by becoming the initial winner of the Trevor Bennie Club Person of the Year Award.

In the 17 seasons that he has been involved in the club, Wooly has been an excellent player, supporter and worker for the club and was deservedly awarded Life Membership in April 2021. He is current Club Vice President and in the 2021-22 season won the Trevor Bennie Club Person of the Year Award.

29 - ANDREW WOOLFORD

2008-

Joel commenced his involvement with the Wayback Cricket Club when he joined our Colts team in the 1994-95 season. He was a member of our Colts team for 3 seasons and was Colts Captain in 1996/97, which was his last season in the Colts. During this season he was Vice Captain of Port Lincoln’s winning Horgan Shield team (he also played Horgan Shield the previous season), won the Association Colts Most Valuable Player trophy and won both the Association’s and Club’s 2 Colts Batting trophies, which was a good achievement considering that he suffered a broken knee cap at the end of the previous season.

His first senior game for the club was in the B Grade match against Lincoln South on the 2nd December 1995. His A Grade debut followed 3 weeks later against Southern Eyre South. Joel was a member of our 1996/97 A Grade Premiership team. However, following on going issues with his knees, he virtually gave cricket away at the end of the 1998/99 season apart from fleeting appearances over the next 2 seasons.

After continual coaxing from club members, Joel finally made a return to cricket in the 2011-12 season and has been a regular senior player since that time. During the major part of his senior career, Joel has been a right hand opening batsman, who has also kept wickets for a large portion of this period. He was originally a promising right arm leg spin bowler, however since his return to senior cricket he has been an occasional right arm slow medium bowler.

Joel has played 224 senior games (153 A Grade and 71 B Grade) for the club. He has made 1,893 A Grade runs, which has included 4 half centuries with a top score of 72. He has also been part of 4 A Grade century partnerships. He has taken 84 catches, made 6 stumpings and taken the 1 A Grade wicket. Joel was A Grade Vice Captain in 2012-13 and A Grade Captain for 3 seasons from 2013-14 to 2015-16. His wicket keeping talents were recognised in 2014-15 when he won the Association A Grade wicket keeping trophy.

Probably the highlight of Joel’s A Grade playing career was being a member of the 2024-2025 premiership team along with his son Kai. This was the first time in the club’s history that a father and son had played in the same A Grade premiership team.

During his B Grade career, Joel has made 1,694 runs, which has included 13 half centuries, with a highest score of 66. He has also been a part of 1 B Grade century partnership. He has taken 32 catches, made 3 stumpings and  taken 18 wickets, with a best bowling performance of 4/27 against Tasmans in 2022-23. Joel was B Grade Captain in the 2023-24 and 2024-25 (non-playing) seasons and was a member of the 2021-22 B Grade premiership team.

He won the Club’s B Grade Most Valuable Player trophy in the 2021-22, 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons, the Club’s B Grade Batting Aggregate trophy in 2021-22 & 2023-24 and the Club’s Spirit of Cricket Award in 2022-23. He was a joint winner of the Association’s B Grade Batting Aggregate trophy in 2023-24 and was a member of the Association’s B Grade team of the year in 2019-20 and 2023-24.

Joel represented Port Lincoln at Association level in the 2nd XI from 2012-13 to 2015-16 and again in 2023-24. He was a member of 3 successive winning Henderson Shield 2nd XI teams, 2 of which he captained. He was also team manager of the victorious 2023-24 Colts Horgan Shield team.

During his time with the club, Joel has fulfilled a number of off field and administration roles. He has been on the Club’s Management Committee for 12 seasons, was Vice President in 2017-18 & 2018-19 and was our Association Delegate for 4 seasons. He has also been a regular attendee at working bees, fund raising events and club functions. Joel organised the paving at the entrance of our training facility and has regularly assisted with other tasks associated with the ongoing maintenance and improvement of our training facility.

Over the last few seasons, he has also assisted with tasks such as pitch line marking and cleaning of changerooms and storage sheds in our training facility. In recent years, he has had a heavy involvement with the coaching of our junior players, as Under 12’s coach from 2018-19 to 2022-23 and Senior Colts coach for 2022-23 & 2023-24, after being the assistant coach in the 2021-22 season.

The entire Davies family are invested in the Club - Jacqui is a valuable behind the scenes volunteer and attendee for social functions and Kai and Dane are both heavily involved with playing and off-field activities.

31 - JOEL DAVIES

1995-1999
2011 -

Waybacks were very fortunate to have a player of Vern's class to be the captain in our inaugural year. He came to us after serving as a POW in Singapore during the war years and was not in the best of health, but this did not affect his cricketing ability. He had played cricket in Port Lincoln pre-war with the High School and Ramblers Clubs and later with Yeelanna in the Great Flinders Association.

Vern played his first game for the club on 19th October 1946 against Ramblers, which was the first match in the history of our club. In this match, he took the first wicket for the club. He played for the club for 4 years and captained the club in its first 2 years. In 1946-1947 the club finished minor premiers, which in the early years meant that they won the premiership. Vern was also a key member of our 1949-1950 team in his last season, who also won the premiership after finishing as clear minor premiers.

Vern was a very skillful right arm off spin bowler and in his four years for the club took over 120 wickets. He took 5 wickets in an innings on at least 9 occasions and took 10 wickets in a match 3 times (2 of these matches were 1 day games). His best bowling performance was 8/20 against Ramblers on 14/12/1946, after taking 4/16 in Ramblers first innings the previous week.

His bowling prowess saw him win the Association Bowling Aggregate in 1946-1947 and our Bowling Aggregate and Average trophies in the 1946-47 & 1948-49 seasons. He took a hat trick in the 1946-47 season and may also have won club bowling trophies in the following season, however we do not have sufficient records to verify whether this was the case.

Vern was a punishing left hand bat, who made over 500 runs for the club with a highest score of 59. He was also a brilliant close to the wicket fieldsman although his eyesight was failing because of his POW days. He represented Port Lincoln in each of the 4 seasons that he played with Waybacks and also played for Eyre Peninsula in SACA carnivals and played against touring international teams for the SA Country XI.

After leaving Port Lincoln through work commitments, he played cricket in Streaky Bay, Belair and Whyalla. Vern was awarded Life Membership at our 30 Year Dinner in November 1976. He passed away in October 1996 shortly before our 50 Year Anniversary celebrations, aged 79.

2 - VERDUN CURNOW

1946 - 1950

For over four decades Trevor Bennie was actively involved with the Wayback Cricket Club. As a youngster, Trevor played in our 1956 Colts Premiership team and the following season, whilst still a Colt, progressed to the seniors (his first game was on 19th October 1957), where his forceful batting and neat glove work were to develop. Trevor played for the club in 16 of the following 23 seasons and became an aggressive batsman, who would often open the innings and score a quick fifty. He was an excellent wicket keeper, taking many leg side stumpings when standing up to medium pace bowlers. Trevor represented the Association in 6 of the seasons that he played and finished playing in 1980.

Unfortunately we do not have all of Trevor's playing records prior to the 1971-72 season. However, during his career, Trevor would have played over 200 A Grade games in which he would have made over 3,500 runs (we know of 3,419). His highest score was 101 and he made at least 11 half centuries. He is one of only 8 players to have scored more than 3,000 runs in A Grade for the Club. As a wicket keeper from 1972-73 to 1979-80, Trevor took 124 catches and made 41 stumpings. It may also surprise many people that he took at least 24 A Grade wickets, with a best bowling performance of 5/32. Trevor won the Association's Most Efficient Player trophy in 1971-72 and the Association Wicket-keeping trophy in 1977-78.

Trevor was a very astute captain, who would recognise batsmen's weaknesses and set fields accordingly. He was club captain for 6 seasons in the 1970's, which included the 1971/72 and 1976/77 premiership teams. Trevor played in 5 premiership teams overall, the first in 1957-58 and the last in 1979-80.

When the club was going through a difficult period in the early 1970's, it was Trevor and a handful of die-hard Waybackers who refused to let the club fold. Trevor was very active at this time finding new recruits. He was also active in fundraising, by helping to establish the 100 club and meat spins at the Lincoln Hotel. This money was the lifeblood of our cricket club and was critical to our future progress.

In 1978/79, Trevor became Club President, a position that he was to hold for sixteen consecutive seasons. During this time the club achieved great playing success and continued to develop. Trevor was the chief organiser of our excellent practice facilities. When he retired as President in 1994, the club was in a very healthy state in all areas. Over the years Trevor has also shown an interest in Colts and has been a generous sponsor and trophy donor. He was awarded life membership at our 30 Year Dinner in November 1976.

Trevor also had a significant input into the Port Lincoln Cricket Association and was the team manager for the South Australian Country XI teams against MCC in 1974 and India in 1977. He was awarded Life Membership of the Port Lincoln Cricket Association in 1982. He also received a SACA Volunteer Medal in 2011 in recognition for over 25 year’s service to the Wayback Cricket Club. In the 2020-2021 season the Club decided to have an annual Club Person of the Year award, which has been named the Trevor Bennie Club Person of the Year. Trevor was selected as Vice-Captain of the club's Team of Champions that was announced at our 75 year celebrations in November 2022.

The services that Trevor offered over many years were recognised on 14th February 1981 when a Testimonial Dinner was held to honour his contribution to the club. Trevor passed away in April 2023 aged 81.

4 -TREVOR BENNIE

1956-1996

Kevin Enright commenced work in Port Lincoln in 1973 and started his cricket career with Waybacks on 3/2/1973. Kevin played 156 A Grade games for the club. In these games he took 349 wickets and made 731 runs. He is the 5th highest wicket taker in the Club's history and his bowling record is all the more noteworthy, as he was 33 years of age when he joined the club and was still opening the bowling 10 years later. His best bowling performance was 9/18 and he took 5 wickets in an innings 16 times and 10 wickets in a match once. Kevin won our A Grade Bowling Aggregate and A Grade Bowling Average trophies twice. His highest score was 65, which was his only half century for the club. He was a very lively opening bowler who formed a great opening bowling partnership with John Forbes. Kevin also played 5 B Grade games during his career with Waybacks, when his employment made him unavailable for A Grade selection. In these games he took 12 wickets and made 57 runs.

Kevin played in 5 consecutive A Grade premiership sides from 1978/79 to 1983/84 and combined with John Forbes in these games to dismiss the opposition for less than 50 runs on all occasions. Kevin was also a member of the 1976/77 A Grade Premiership team. He was A Grade Captain in 1973/74 and certainly led from the front that season by taking 63 wickets and making 248 runs. He was a committee member for a number of years and was Vice President of the club for 5 years. 1973- 1984

Roy (Snow) Hicks played his first game for Waybacks on 15th February 1947 against Ramblers in our first season. As far as we can determine, he played his last game on 22nd October 1960 against Tasmans. Although Snow was not a regular cricketer for Waybacks (tennis was his other sport), he did play games for the club in 11 of our first 15 seasons.

Unfortunately, we do not have all of the records of Snow's playing career, however, he would have played over 50 A Grade and several B Grade games for the club and scored in excess of 500 runs. His highest score was 78 not out in the Semi Final against Tasmans on 1st of March 1958, when he put on 103 runs for the 4th wicket with Ron Richardson. This partnership was a big factor in the club's outright victory in this match. Snow was a member of our 1957-1958 Premiership team, which was the only time that he played in a premiership team during his career with our club.

Snow was a right hand middle order batsman and an occasional right arm spin bowler. His best bowling figures that we are aware of are 3/9. He was also an brilliant fieldsman, especially close to the wicket. Snow was a good administrator of the club and was secretary of the club for 3 years. He is best remembered as being a great club man and was awarded life membership in February 1985 when our Honour Board was unveiled. Snow passed away in September 1995 aged 75.

1947-1960

John "Nippo" Nippress arrived in Port Lincoln in March 1976 and commenced his playing career in the 1976/77 season, which also coincided with the re-commencement of the PLCA B Grade competition. He played 234 B Grade games over the next 13 seasons. His natural out swing bowling combined with a good line and length, consistently brought results and enabled him take 366 wickets for the club at an average of under 13. He took 5 wickets in an innings 13 times, with a best bowling performance of 7/37 and is the highest wicket taker for the club in B Grade. His unorthodox lower order batting saw him score 1,477 runs (highest score 56), with a fair portion of his scoring shots either going to, or over the fence. Nippo won several club bowling trophies and was the B Grade Most Valuable Player in 1979/80. He played 1 game of A Grade cricket.

His introduction as Vice-Captain of the B Grade in 1977/78 was a prelude to a remarkable record as B Grade Captain. John captained the team for the next eleven seasons, capturing ten successive premierships. Whilst the teams of those years were obviously quite strong, John provided strong leadership and combined with his astute cricketing brain, Waybacks won many titles when  starting as underdogs in the fight for the flag.

As an Administrator at both club and Association level, John's great organisation and communication skills stand out. At club level, John has been on the committee for many years, serving as Secretary for 11 seasons, Treasurer for 20 seasons, Vice President for 3 seasons and President for 6 seasons. During this time he has assisted in all aspects of the running of the club, including the initial nine years involvement with our club publication the Wayback Wisden.

John has also made a large commitment to the Port Lincoln Cricket Association, being a club delegate for many years, as well as at various times holding the positions of Treasurer, Statistician, Publicity Officer and President.

Such intense involvement was recognised, when he was rewarded with Club Life Membership in April 1986 and Association Life Membership in March 1989. In 2009 the B Grade Most Valuable Player trophy became the John Nippress Medal in honour of John's captaincy record. John also received a SACA Volunteer Medal in March 2011 in recognition of over 25 year’s service to the Wayback Cricket Club. He was also inducted as the first Legend of the Club at our 75 year celebrations in November 2022. John was one of the driving forces behind the publication of a book on the Club’s 75 year history which was released during our 75 year celebrations.

John still has an active involvement in the club and attends most games and functions. He is a member of our Life Members Selection Committee.

Bill Teagle was a member of our club's inaugural premiership side. He played his first game on 19th October 1946, which was the first game in the history of our club and played his last game on 21st March 1959. During this period he played over 100 games, many of which were 2 day games. Bill was one of our key players in 1946-1947 and 1949-1950 when we finished minor premiers and therefore won the premiership. He was also a member of our 1954-1955 (he took 9/33 in both innings of this match) and 1957-1958 premiership teams.

A quick right hand bowler, who occasionally turned his hand to leg breaks (he took 11 wickets in the first match of the 1956-57 season bowling leg breaks), Bill's bowling exploits are superb throughout his thirteen seasons of cricket for Waybacks. He took over 400 wickets for the club and regularly took big hauls, which included 5 wickets in an innings on at least 30 occasions and ten wickets in a match at least 6 times. He is the 3rd highest wicket taker in the Club's history and also took 2 hat tricks whilst playing for Waybacks.

Bill was also a hard hitting right handed batsman, who scored over 2,300 runs for the club. He scored 3 centuries and a number of half centuries, with a highest score of 118 and featured in at least 2 century partnerships. One of his centuries was scored in only 60 minutes. A fair portion of his higher scores featured some big sixes with a lost ball sometimes being the end result.

Bill played in many association and carnival matches and claimed the prize scalp of test batsman, Graham Hole for a duck on Centenary Oval in a match against the SA XI in 1951. Bill won the Association Bowling Average in 1951-52 & 1955-56 and the Association Batting Average in 1957-58. He also won the club's Batting Aggregate once, the Batting Average twice, the Bowling Aggregate at least 4 times and the Bowling Average at least 3 times.

Bill was one of the best all round cricketers in the history of our club and is one of only 2 players to take over 400 wickets and make over 2,000 runs. Examples of his great all round ability are in the 1950-51 season, where he made 358 runs and took 58 wickets and a match against Charlton on 10th January 1953 when he scored 104 N.O. and then took the combined figures of 11 wickets for 70 runs in the two innings to follow, to secure an outright victory in a 1 day match.

Bill and his family left Port Lincoln in 1959 and moved to Adelaide where he played good cricket until late in life, before moving to Victoria. He was awarded Life Membership in at our 50th Year Anniversary Dinner in November 1996 and was selected in the club's Team of Champions that was announced at our 75 year celebrations in November 2022. Bill passed away in March 2004 shortly before his 80th birthday.

Merv commenced his playing career with the Wayback Cricket Club in the 1948/49 season. Prior to joining Waybacks, both Merv and his brother Bev played for the Flinders Cricket Club. Merv’s first game for Waybacks was in the B Grade on October 30th 1948 v Tasmans. His A Grade debut came shortly afterwards on November 20th 1948 also against Tasmans.

Merv’s playing career went from 1948/49 to 1966/67. Unfortunately, we do not have all of the club records for this period. From the information that we have been able to obtain from the Port Lincoln Times archives, Merv played at least 175 A Grade, together with a few B Grade games for the club. Only 6 other players have played more games for Waybacks than Merv. During his playing career Merv scored over 3,000 runs (we know of 3,192) mainly as a right handed opening batsman, which makes him the eighth highest run scorer in the history of the club from the records we have been able to obtain.

Merv’s highest score that we are aware of was 107 NO against Charlton on December 12th 1959, which was Merv’s only century for the club. He also scored at least 10 half centuries at A Grade level and was a part of at least 2 A Grade century partnerships. Merv’s bowling talents were rarely called upon and from the records we have, he took only 16 wickets during his A Grade playing career.

Merv was a member of our 1949-50, 1954-55, 1957-58 and 1962-63 (undefeated) A Grade premiership teams. He was Vice Captain of the 1957-58 team and top scored in both of our innings in that year's Grand Final. Merv captained the club in the 1959-60 and 1960-61 seasons and won both club batting trophies in the 1959-60 season. He also represented Port Lincoln at Association level in 8 of the seasons that he played for Waybacks and captained a few of these Association teams.

Whilst we do have full details of Merv’s off field activities with Waybacks, we do know that he was one of the club’s key members in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Merv and his brother Bev were the driving forces behind the laying of a concrete practice pitch at the rear of the Verran Terrace club rooms of the Wayback Football Club in the early 1960’s. Merv was also an Association Delegate or Proxy Delegate for the club for 5 years in the 1960’s and he was regularly given the task at the start of the season to check the gear and oil the bats.

In recognition of his long involvement with the club, Merv was awarded Life Membership in April 2013. Merv currently lives in retirement at Coulta on Lower Eyre Peninsula, with his daughter and son in law. Craig or Huddo, commenced his playing career for Waybacks in the 2001-2002 season, following a transfer in his employment from Adelaide. His first game for the club was in the B Grade on January 5th 2002, which was followed shortly afterwards by his first A Grade game on February 2nd 2002 against Charlton. Huddo played 22 A Grade and 131 B Grade games for the Club during his 12 year playing stint. Having to work shift work curtailed his playing appearances somewhat in his later years. He started his career as a right hand upper order batsman, but for the major part of his career his main strength was his wily left arm spin bowling, which bamboozled many an opposition B Grade batsman.

Craig took 9 A Grade and 169 B Grade wickets for the Club and is currently the 5th highest wicket taker for the club in B Grade. His best bowling figures are 3/27 in A Grade and 6/26 in B Grade. He took 5 wickets in an innings 3 times in B Grade, together with a hat trick. He scored 151 runs in A Grade with a highest score of 31 not out and 1,013 runs in B Grade with a highest score of 54, which was his only half century for the Club. He also took 49 catches in B Grade, mainly in the slips cordon. Craig is only 1 of 5 players in the Club's history to  have scored over 1,000 runs and taken over 100 wickets in the B Grade. He also represented Port Lincoln at Association level in the 2003/04 season.

Huddo played in the A grade 2002-2003 premiership team and also played in the 2004-2005, 2006-2007 and 2011-2012 B Grade premiership teams. He captained the B Grade in 2005-2006 & 2006-2007 and was Vice Captain in 2004-2005. Huddo won the B Grade Most Valuable Player trophy in 2011-2012 and both the B Grade Bowling Aggregate and Average trophies 3 times.

During his time with Waybacks, Craig was an active off field member. He was on the Management Committee for 5 years, was Treasurer for 3 years and was also on the Social Committee for a few years, one of which was as President. Huddo regularly attended working bees, assisted with the lawn mowing of our practice facility, was an active performer at social functions and also contributed articles for our club magazine whilst he was B Grade Captain.

In recognition of his service to the club, Craig was awarded Life membership in April 2014. Craig and his family left Port Lincoln in January 2015 to return to Adelaide. He still maintains an interest in the club's performances.

24 - CRAIG HUDSON

2002-2014

Brenton or BP commenced his playing career with the Wayback Cricket Club in the 1986-87 season. He previously played for the Cockaleechie Cricket Club in the Great Flinders Cricket Association. His first game for the club was in the B Grade on 15/11/1986 against Bostons. Unfortunately, his first season for the club was not a memorable one, apart from when he took 2/7 in his second match, as he was unable to make an impact on the scoreboard in the 10 B Grade games that he played. His playing fortunes turned around in the following season, when after 2 B Grade games, he was promoted to the A Grade and remained there until his departure from Port Lincoln at the end of the 1991/92 season.

Brenton has played 73 A Grade and 18 B Grade games for the club, the major portion as a hard hitting right hand opening bat. During his career, Brenton made 1,681 A Grade and 195 B Grade runs and was part of 2 A Grade century partnerships. His A Grade run tally includes a highest score of 105 against Tasmans on 2/11/1991, which was his only century and 7 half centuries. He also took 27 A Grade catches and the one A Grade wicket. BP was a key member of our 1991/92 A Grade premiership team, as Deputy Vice Captain and won the A Grade Most Valuable Player and Batting Aggregate trophies in that season. He was also A Grade Vice Captain in the 1989/90 season and represented Port Lincoln at Association level in the 1988/89, 1989/90 & 1991/92 seasons. He won the B Grade Fielding trophy in 2017-2018, despite only playing 6 games as a "fill in".

Brenton's off field activities during his first stint with the club were as a Social Committee member, Assistant Colts Coach, Publicity Officer, Association Delegate, Club Treasurer for 2 years and Management Committee member for 4 years. Brenton and his wife Donna were also regular attendees at club events and willing assisted at club social functions. Shortly after the completion of the 1991/92 season Brenton and Donna moved to Cleve, so that Brenton could take up an Administration position with the Cleve Council. It was just prior to this time that Donna unfortunately had her first Multiple Sclerosis attack.

The Parsons family moved back to Port Lincoln during the 2008/09 season and Brenton immediately became involved with the Club by assisting with the coaching of the Colts team, which included his son Jack as one of the playing members. Since that time, with the exception of a brief period when the Parsons family relocated to Cummins, Brenton has maintained an active role within the club and has held a number of official positions. His official duties during this period have included  Colts Coach and Association Colts Committee Representative for 2 years, Vice President for 5 years, Club Treasurer for 2 years and being a member of the Management Committee for 8 seasons. He also acted as the Toyota Raffle Coordinator for 2 years, which assisted the club raise considerable monies. Other duties have included regular maintenance work on our practice facility and assistance with social functions.

Brenton's service to the club since the family's return to Port Lincoln has been even more meritorious when the poor health of his late wife Donna, who unfortunately passed away in July 2021, was taken into account, particularly with the ongoing care that she required prior to her re location to the Matthew Flinders Nursing Home early in 2013.

In recognition of his great service to the Club, Brenton was awarded Life Membership in April 2017. BP still has an active involvement in the club and is a regular attendee at club training and matches. He is also a member of our Life Members Selection Committee. His son Jack is a current senior player and in the 2021-22 season won the A Grade Most Valuable Player award, making it the first time in the club's history that a father and son have both won this award.

Darren (Monkey or Monk) commenced his career with Waybacks in the Colts team in the 1997/98 season. He played Colts for 3 seasons and commenced playing regular senior cricket in the 2000/2001 season.  He is now in his 24thyear of senior cricket for Waybacks, which is a fine achievement. He has played 77 A Grade games and 271 B Grade games. His first senior game was in the B Grade in November 1999, with his A Grade debut being a month later. His B Grade game tally is also the highest for the club.

Over his senior career with Waybacks, Darren has taken 372 wickets with his off spinners. 305 of these wickets have been in the B Grade and he is one of only 2 players to have taken 300 B Grade wickets for the club. His best bowling figures have been 4/33 in the A Grade and 5/6 in the B Grade. He has taken 5 wickets in an innings on 5 occasions for the Wayback B Grade.

Batting has never been one of Darren’s cricketing strengths. His run tally in senior cricket is 594 (89 A & 505 B), with his highest score in senior cricket being a sparkling 26 not out against Southern Eyre South in December 2012 at Poole Oval. Whilst not all that fleet of foot in the field, Darren has “good hands” and has taken 116 catches (20 A Grade & 96 B Grade) during his senior career.

Darren was a member of Waybacks 2004-05 A Grade premiership team and has also played in 4 Wayback B Grade premiership teams (2009-10, 2011-12, 2015-16 & 2021-22). He has won the club’s B Grade Bowling Aggregate trophy three times, with his best return being 27 wickets in the 2015-16 season, the B Grade Bowling Average trophy 4 times and the B Grade Fielding Trophy once. He also won the Association B Grade Most Valuable Under 21 player in 2003-04 and the Association  B Grade Bowling Average trophy in 2015-16 and was a member of the PLCA B Grade team of the year in 2014-15 & 2017-18. Darren represented Port Lincoln at Association level in the 2004/05, 2006/07, 2007/08 & 2008/09 seasons.

Darren was B Grade Captain for 6 seasons (2018-2019 to 2022-2023 and 2024-2025 (reluctantly)) and did a great job in this role, particularly during the 2020-2021 season, when he spent many hours chasing up players to play in both grades. He became a B Grade premiership captain in 2021-22 and was also Vice Captain in 2010-11 & 2017-18. He has served on the club’s Management & Social Committees for a number of years and has also been involved from time to time with the publication of the club’s magazine.

Darren has certainly been a loyal servant of the club over his 24 year senior playing career and was deservedly awarded Life Membership in April 2021. He is a current B Grade player and one of the current members on the Club's Management Committee.

30 - BRUCE LLOYD

1983-1988
1992-1995
2012-

In the 2007/2008 season, Julie became one of the club’s 3 publicity officers. Their chief responsibility was to publish the club’s magazine the Wayback Wisden, which at that time came out either once or twice during the season. In the following season, Julie became the club’s sole Publicity Officer, a position that she held for a total of 17 seasons.

Once she took over the role, Julie ensured that the Wisden came out twice each season until the 2022-2023 season, when the Wisden became an annual publication. In her 2nd season as publicity officer, Julie included colour photos of social functions and then shortly afterwards “action” colour photos from games, which were provided by club photographer Martin Tyler.

The half yearly Wisdens were usually available at our Christmas Show and Presentation Night and were eagerly sought after by attendees at these functions. The club has certainly been fortunate to have someone like Julie to put out a high standard publication on a regular basis, which we are sure would be the envy of many other cricket clubs throughout Australia.

In her role as club Publicity Officer, Julie also undertook a number of other tasks such as:

  • Sent out individual invitations to club members for annual Presentation Nights and designed and printed the menus for these functions.

  • Designed and printed tickets for Backwards Draw fundraisers that the club held every few years.

  • Designed flyers for club social functions and other events which could then be emailed to members

  • Published club newsletters from time to time

  • Designed and printed Life Membership and Sponsorship Certificates

  • Arranged for copies of the Wisden to be put into a suitable format so that they could be emailed to many past players, who regularly gave positive feedback on the quality of these publications.

As one the original administrators of the club’s Facebook page, Julie posted information regarding upcoming club events, as well as reminders to all regular contributors of Wisden articles to get their information in before her deadlines, which unfortunately did not always happen.

Julie was club secretary in the 2015/16, 2016/17 and 2017/18 seasons and was a member of the club committee in these seasons, as well as in the 2010/11 and 2011/12 seasons. During this period, Julie actively supported club social functions and also assisted in organising some of these events.

In the 2014/15 season, Julie arranged for her employer the Sarin Group to become one of the club’s major sponsors. The Sarin Group have continued to be a major sponsor of the club and their financial support over the last 11 seasons has been greatly appreciated and the club is certainly indebted to Julie for arranging this annual sponsorship.

Probably Julie’s greatest amount of work for the club was prior to the club’s 75-year celebrations in November 2022. Julie emailed/posted invitations to about 150 past players and members. She also designed and printed the menus and seating plans for the dinner which was held on the 5th November 2022.

Early in 2022, the club committee decided that it would be an opportune time to publish a book on the club’s 75-year history. This publication ended up being a 200 page book and Julie did an amazing amount of work arranging the layout of all of the articles and photographs which formed the major part of the publication. The printer of the book told us that the preparatory work that Julie had done saved the club a considerable amount of money in printing and publication costs.

As a reward for her lengthy service as Club Publicity Officer, Julie was awarded Life Membership in March 2025 and became the club’s first female life member.

This also resulted in the club’s first life membership couple, as Julie’s husband Peter was awarded Life Membership in 2009.
